Over 27 million children are growing up in under-resourced families in America. Very few can afford arts education if public schools can’t provide it. And everywhere in the country, public school art programs are closing down.
Cinetribe After-School is a fifteen-week program that incorporates art therapy and filmmaking. Twelve children of various levels of academic performance are invited to join the program. The goals of the program are 1) increase critical thinking skills, reading comprehension and writing skills among seventh and eighth graders of under-resourced backgrounds; and 2) increase self-esteem and love of learning of seventh and eighth graders of under-resourced backgrounds.
The program then culminates with a film festival of the students’ creations. Family, friends and supporters are all welcome to witness the storytellers’ work.
Through a five year partnership with school systems in Hartsdale, NY and Hamden, Connecticut, we were able to create a curriculum and guidelines that can be implemented in middle schools across the country.
